NRL Rugby Ball Display Case Guide: Protecting Your Steeden Memorabilia

Every rugby league ball tells you exactly what game it belongs to. The competition logo, the sponsor stamped across the panels, sometimes a signature or a scribbled date — a match ball is one of the most specific, unmistakable pieces of memorabilia in the sport. It just doesn't get treated that way once it's sitting on a shelf gathering dust.

The Ball Behind the Game: Steeden

Almost every rugby league ball you'll ever collect carries the same name: Steeden. The brand was founded in Brisbane in 1958, when twin brothers Eric and Raymond Steeden opened a factory producing cricket balls, rugby league balls and boxing bags. It's been the official match ball of the elite competition since 1973, and today supplies the NRL, NRLW, State of Origin, the Kangaroos and Jillaroos, and Super League in the UK — a partnership with the NRL that's been extended through to 2027.

The Steeden name is so tied to the sport that plenty of fans use it as a noun for the ball itself, the same way people say "Hoover" instead of vacuum cleaner. From Arthur Beetson's era through to Nathan Cleary's, it's the one constant that's been in play for every kick, every bomb, and every match-winning field goal the game has produced.

Fun fact: Steeden has been Australian owned since 1958, but the company itself has been part of British sporting goods group Gray-Nicolls (better known for cricket bats) since 1995.

What Makes a Ball Worth Displaying

Not every rugby ball needs its own case, but plenty do — a signed ball from a milestone game, a State of Origin match ball, a grand final souvenir, or anything with a signature that won't survive years of casual handling. Once a ball's been signed or set aside as a keepsake, dust and UV exposure are the two things most likely to ruin it, and neither is reversible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the case come with a ball?

No — this is the display case only. Balls are not included.

Will it fit a standard Steeden match ball?

Yes. The internal build size is approximately 33 × 20 × 24 cm, shaped specifically for a rugby league ball rather than a round basketball or soccer ball.

Is it difficult to assemble?

No — it's glue-free and screw-free, designed for easy assembly with no tools required.

Will it protect a signed ball from fading?

Yes — the sealed acrylic case keeps dust and everyday handling away from the ball and its signature.

Is a stand included?

Yes, a ball stand is included in the package, along with a user manual.

Give the Ball the Same Respect as the Jersey

A signed jersey usually gets framed. A match ball just as often ends up in a cupboard — despite being just as specific, just as hard to replace. Display it properly.
