Melbourne United are one of the most decorated franchises in Australian basketball — six NBL championships across four decades, the second-most of any club in league history. From Andrew Gaze's record-breaking scoring nights to modern title runs at John Cain Arena, United's history gives collectors plenty to be proud of on the wall.
Whether you've got a signed jersey, a match ball, or both, here's the story behind the club — and the two best ways to actually display what you've collected.
The History of Melbourne United
The club made its NBL debut in 1984 as the Melbourne Tigers, an extension of the Melbourne Basketball Association whose roots trace back to the Victorian Basketball Association of 1931. Under father-and-son duo Lindsay and Andrew Gaze, the Tigers became the standout franchise of the 1990s — Andrew set a still-standing NBL record of 44.1 points per game in 1987 and went on to become the league's greatest-ever player, helping the Tigers to championships in 1993 and 1997, with further titles following in 2006 and 2008.
After financial difficulty forced the club into private ownership in 2002, the Gaze era ended in 2005, and in May 2014 the franchise was rebranded from the Melbourne Tigers to Melbourne United — a controversial change at the time, but one that ushered in a new era of success. United broke through for championships in 2018 and 2021, taking the club's all-time title count to six, second only to the Perth Wildcats.
Today the club plays home games at John Cain Arena within the Melbourne Park precinct, led on court by long-serving captain Chris Goulding, one of the finest shooters in NBL history, alongside international talent that has helped raise the profile of Australian basketball on the world stage.
Fun fact: Andrew Gaze's 44.1 points-per-game average for the 1987 season is still an NBL record more than three decades later — set the same year the Tigers finished with a 3–23 record.
