The Collingwood Magpies are the biggest club in Australian football — the most attended, most watched and most talked-about team in the AFL. Founded in 1892, Collingwood has spent more than 130 years building a supporter base and a trophy cabinet that few clubs anywhere in Australian sport can match.

Whether you've collected a signed guernsey, own a match-day jersey, or simply want to celebrate your love for the black and white, displaying your Collingwood jersey is one of the best ways to honour the club's extraordinary history.

The History of the Collingwood Magpies

Collingwood Football Club was formed on 12 February 1892 in the inner-Melbourne suburb it's named after, and played its first game against Carlton that May. After winning the Victorian Football Association premiership in 1896, Collingwood joined seven other clubs the following year to found the breakaway Victorian Football League — the competition now known as the AFL. Sporting black and white stripes inspired by the Australian magpie, the club was nicknamed the "Magpies," or simply "the Pies," from day one.

Collingwood's most famous era came in the late 1920s, when its "Machine" side under coach Jock McHale won four consecutive premierships from 1927 to 1930 — a record that has never been matched, including a fully undefeated season in 1929. McHale himself remains the longest-serving coach in VFL/AFL history, guiding the club for 38 seasons and eight premierships between 1912 and 1949.

After a 32-year premiership drought, Collingwood broke through in 1990 under Leigh Matthews, defeating Essendon by 48 points. Further flags followed in 2010 and, most recently, 2023 — a four-point Grand Final win over Brisbane under coach Craig McRae that brought the club level with Carlton and Essendon on 16 VFL/AFL premierships, the most of any club in history.

The Modern Era

Collingwood's 2023 premiership arrived in the same year the club broke the AFL's all-time membership record, with more than 106,000 members — a reflection of a supporter base that has always been the club's defining asset. From the "Machine" of the 1920s to Craig McRae's modern side, the throughline of Collingwood's history has been the same: relentless expectation, and a fan base that shows up whatever the era.
