Australian basketball has been building toward this moment for almost fifty years. Whether it's a signed NBL ball from a local club or an NBA piece from further afield, a basketball worth keeping is worth displaying properly — not sitting in a cupboard collecting dust.
The National Basketball League: Australia's Basketball Story
The NBL was born out of a meeting in an unused aircraft hangar at Sydney Airport in 1978, where NSW Basketball president John Raschke sat down with ten interested parties to plan a national competition. It launched the following year as the National Invitation Basketball League, was renamed the NBL in 1980, and played its first-ever game on 24 February 1979 — with the St Kilda Saints going on to become the league's first champions.
Ten foundation teams contested that first season, and the Illawarra Hawks remain the only club to have competed in every single one since. The league found its biggest stars in the 1980s and 90s — Andrew Gaze remains the competition's all-time leading scorer with 18,908 points, a seven-time MVP who averaged over 44 points a game in a single season — before weathering financial struggles in the 2000s and rebuilding into the competition it is today: ten clubs, nine in Australia and one in New Zealand, drawing more than 750,000 spectators a season.
Fun fact: The Perth Wildcats are the most decorated club in NBL history with ten championships — and the very first NBL season in 1979 only happened because the Newcastle Falcons organised it, charging each of the other clubs a $300 fee just to take part.
NBA Memorabilia Too
Plenty of Australian collections aren't limited to the NBL — a signed NBA ball, whether picked up on a trip overseas or through a local signing event, deserves the same level of protection as anything from the local competition. The case doesn't discriminate by league; it's built around the ball, not the badge on it.
